The University of Sydney is Australia's first university and one of the largest in the region. It is a research-intensive university offering a wide range of qualifications across many areas. Its Faculty of Dentistry has produced outstanding dentistry graduates for over 100 years. Today, the Faculty is the largest of the nine dental schools in Australia. The Dean of Dentistry, Professor Eli Schwarz, is stepping down from the position and the University is seeking to appoint his replacement. The Dean is responsible for the general management of the Faculty, providing leadership and support for all research, teaching and learning activities provided by the Faculty, overseeing the finances of the Faculty and for the overall supervision of its staff.

The successful applicant will be a distinguished scholar and researcher of international standing in a field of knowledge or clinical discipline within Dentistry and have a breadth of interests and a sympathy for other research interests represented in the Faculty. In addition, s/he will demonstrate a capacity for high-level academic leadership, strategic vision and planning at a senior level; a capacity for practical and supportive administration, good financial management, and clear decision-making; and a record of success in fund raising through partnerships with alumni and external parties.

The Dean is a member of the University's Senior Executive Group. This group is chaired by the Vice-Chancellor and includes the Deputy Vice-Chancellors and other deans. It meets on a fortnightly basis as a decision-making body that oversees the development and implementation of university-wide strategy and priority activities. The new Dean will be expected to actively contribute to its work and participate in University-wide projects.
