Awards and Fellowships

The Academy offers the following awards:

Academy of Dental Materials Student Awards
Each year, the members of the Academy of Dental Materials, at various Dental Schools around the world, present awards to the most outstanding students or student researchers in the field of Dental Materials. The award consists of an engraved plaque. The award plaque may be requested at any time during the year. If possible, please give six weeks notice in advance of your Award Ceremony so that the plaque may be ordered and shipped in plenty of time.

The list of recipients for the graduating class of 2004 is available for download in PDF format. Several schools have arranged for photographs of the Award Ceremony to be sent to the Chair of the Fellowship and Awards Committee.

Academy of Dental Materials Founder's Award
The Founder's Award is given to those who have provided meritorious service to the Academy. The award consists of a medal, up to $1000 to defray the expenses of attending the annual meeting to receive the award, and a summary of contributions provided by the individual published in the Academy's journal. Nominations can come from any member and be submitted to the President. The Board of Directors will review the nomination. The award may be given annually, to be determined by the strength of the nomination. Contact the Academy President for more information.

Paffenbarger Award
The Paffenbarger Award is given to the outstanding student presentation at the annual meeting of the Academy. The award is named in honor of Dr. George Paffenbarger, who for many years was Senior Research Associate at the American Dental Association Health Foundation at the National Bureau of Standards in Washington, D.C. (now the National Institute of Science and Technology). 
Students pursuing graduate studies in dental materials or biomaterials sciences and dental students who have conducted research in dental materials or biomaterials sciences are encouraged to compete in the Paffenbarger Award competition at the annual meeting of the Academy. The winner of the award competition receives a prize of US$ 750 and a plaque, the second-place winner receives US$ 250 and a certificate of honorable mention, and the third-place winner receives a certificate of honorable mention. All 3 students also receive free registration for the next ADM Meeting. For more information, contact the Committee Chair.

Academy of Dental Materials Fellowship
Academy members in good standing may apply for Fellowship in the Academy. Applications must include a current c.v. and two letters of recommendation from current Academy members with Fellowship status. An engraved plaque is awarded to each Fellow. The criteria for Fellowship and mailing information are available on the Membership page.

The Toshio Nakao Fellowship - IADR
Background: IADR and GC Corporation are inviting applications from new/young investigators for a sponsored Fellowship in dental materials science. It is intended that the Fellow will spend up to six months at a research facility outside his/her institution and/or country. The Fellowship will be awarded every two years. It is intended that the Fellowship will rotate around different IADR Divisions/Sections and, therefore, no Division/Section may receive more than one Fellowship in any six-year period. Preference will be given to applicants from regions with less developed research programs in the field of materials science. The Fellowship is in memory of Toshio Nakao, former President of GC Corporation.
Purpose: To allow a young investigator to obtain training and experience in dental materials science at a center of excellence.
Eligibility: The candidate must: hold a degree in dentistry or in a scientific discipline be within five years of obtaining his/her dental or scientific degree be a member of IADR and actively engaged in research
Research Topic: Dental materials science and its application in biological and clinical settings.
